Locks & security

Padlocks, hasps and gate security

Gates, sheds, shutters, containers and yards. A good padlock on a bad hasp is still a bad lock: we fit both.

Padlocks, hasps and gate security

Padlocks are the most misunderstood lock there is. People spend properly on the padlock and then hang it off a hasp fixed with four roundhead screws into a softwood frame. The lock never gets attacked; the hasp comes off in one pull.

We supply and fit padlocks and the fixings that carry them, closed-shackle locks where bolt croppers are the risk, weatherproof bodies where corrosion is, and hasps and staples through-bolted into something that will actually hold.

What we supply

  • Closed and semi-closed shackle padlocks: shoulders shield the shackle from croppers and leverage.
  • Weatherproof and marine-grade bodies for gates, yards, boats and anything that lives outside.
  • Shutter locks and anchor locks for roller shutters, garages and commercial units.
  • Container and van locks, including hockey-stick and puck locks.
  • Hasps, staples and security bolts: through-bolted, not screwed.
  • Keyed-alike padlock sets so a site runs on one key rather than a ring of fifteen.

Fixing it to something that holds

This is the part that matters and the part that gets skipped. We fix hasps with coach bolts or security bolts right through the timber or steel, with backing plates where the material is thin, so the fixing cannot be unscrewed or torn out.

On gates and timber structures that are too far gone to hold anything, we will rebuild or reinforce the section first. The carpentry background is why we can do that on the same visit rather than quoting a second trade.

Seized and lost-key padlocks

Corroded padlocks on gates and shutters are a routine call-out, usually on the morning somebody needs access urgently. We remove them cleanly, without damaging the hasp or the gate, and fit a replacement with a weatherproof body so it does not happen again next winter.

Questions we get asked about padlocks

What is a closed-shackle padlock?

One where the body comes up around the shackle so there is almost nothing to get bolt croppers or a bar onto. For gates, shutters, containers and anything on a boundary it is the only sensible choice.

Can you remove a padlock if the key is lost?

Yes. Depending on the lock we will pick it, or cut it in the way that does least damage to the hasp and the gate, then fit a replacement on the spot.

Can several padlocks use the same key?

Yes. Keyed-alike sets are standard for sites, allotments, yards and multi-gate properties, and we can add matching locks later to the same key.

My padlock seizes up every winter. What should I fit?

A weatherproof or marine-grade body with a shielded keyway, plus a hasp that keeps the lock hanging downward so water drains out rather than sitting in the mechanism.
