Door lock fitting, upgrades and repairs

Front doors, back doors, flat entrances, communal doors and internal doors, fitted to a standard, not to whatever was in the van.

Door lock fitting, upgrades and repairs

The front door is where almost every forced entry happens, and almost always through the lock rather than the door. Snapping a cheap euro cylinder takes seconds and no skill at all; it is the single most common method used on UK homes.

We fit locks to doors of every material and upgrade the ones that are not up to the job. The aim is simple, make the lock harder to beat than the door, the frame and the glass beside it, which is more often than not a cheap change.

By door type

  • UPVC and composite: euro cylinder upgrades to three-star anti-snap, multipoint mechanism repair and replacement, handle and keep alignment.
  • Timber: BS3621 five-lever mortice deadlocks, BS-rated nightlatches, sash locks, security strips and hinge bolts.
  • Aluminium and shopfront: hooked deadlocks, cylinder swaps, narrow-stile mortice locks, pull handles and panic hardware.
  • Communal entrances: restricted key systems, access control integration, door closers and keeps that stand up to constant use.
  • Internal and office doors: bathroom locks, office keyed-alike suites, cupboard and stockroom locks.

Upgrades worth paying for

  • Three-star anti-snap cylinders: sacrificial sections that break away and leave the lock working. The best value upgrade on any UPVC or composite front door.
  • Correct cylinder length: a cylinder flush with the handle plate cannot be gripped. See lock replacement.
  • Security handles and plates: hardened plates over the cylinder.
  • London bars and birmingham bars on timber frames, which fail far more often than the lock itself.
  • Hinge bolts on outward-opening and timber doors.
  • Restricted keys so keys cannot be cut at a kiosk by a departing tenant.

Alignment, closing and the slow failure nobody notices

Doors drop. Frames move. A door that needs lifting on the handle to lock, or a key that needs a wiggle, is a door a few months away from a call-out. That is mechanical wear accelerating, and it is cheap to correct and expensive to ignore.

We adjust hinges, keeps and strikes as part of any lock job. If you are already lifting the handle to lock up, get it looked at before the key snaps.

Questions we get asked about door locks

What is an anti-snap lock and do I need one?

A cylinder engineered to break at a sacrificial point if attacked, so the attacker is left holding a stub and the lock still works. If your front door is UPVC or composite and the cylinder is more than a few years old, this is the upgrade to make. It is inexpensive.

How can I tell if my cylinder sticks out too far?

Look at the door edge-on. If the cylinder projects more than about 3mm past the handle plate on either side, it can be gripped and snapped. Send us a photograph from the side and we will tell you.

Do you fit locks to internal doors and cupboards?

Yes: bathroom privacy locks, office and stockroom locks, keyed-alike suites for commercial premises, and cupboard and cabinet locks.

Can you fit locks that all use the same key?

Yes. Keyed-alike suites across a property, or a simple master system where a managing agent holds one key for several doors while each tenant only opens their own.
