Fire blanket supply and installation
The single most useful thing on a kitchen wall, if it is the right size and it is mounted somewhere you can reach without walking past the fire.

Most domestic fires start in the kitchen, and most kitchen fires start in a pan. A fire blanket deals with a pan fire in seconds, costs very little, needs no servicing in the way an extinguisher does, and can be used by someone who has never been shown how.
The two things people get wrong are size and position. A small blanket on a large pan is worse than nothing, and a blanket mounted on the wall behind the hob means reaching over the fire to get it.
Sizing
- 1.0m × 1.0m: domestic kitchens, pans and small appliance fires.
- 1.2m × 1.2m: larger domestic and light commercial, and the size we would fit in an HMO kitchen.
- 1.8m × 1.8m and larger, commercial catering, and anywhere a blanket might be needed on a person rather than a pan.
Commercial kitchens want a blanket and a wet chemical extinguisher: the blanket for the pan, the extinguisher for the fryer. See extinguisher supply.
Where it goes
On the escape side of the room: between you and the door, never past the hob. At a height an adult can reach in one motion without a step, and clear of the splashback so the tabs are not greasy.
In rented and shared accommodation we fit on the wall rather than leaving a loose blanket in a cupboard, because a blanket in a cupboard is a blanket nobody finds.
Commercial and multi-site
For HMOs, student lets, care settings and catering groups we supply and fit across a whole portfolio in one pass and record what is at each address, so the compliance file matches the building. Blankets are checked at the same visit as the extinguishers.
Questions we get asked about fire blankets
Do fire blankets expire?
They have a long service life and no pressure to lose, but they are single-use: once a blanket has been on a fire it goes in the bin and is replaced. We also check them at annual extinguisher visits for damage, contamination and whether the pull-tabs are still free.
What size fire blanket do I need for a home kitchen?
1.0m × 1.0m covers a domestic pan fire. Step up to 1.2m if you cook on a large range or the kitchen is shared, and in an HMO we would fit 1.2m as standard.
Can a fire blanket be used on a deep fat fryer?
On a small pan, yes. On a commercial fryer you want a wet chemical extinguisher as the primary response. The blanket is a secondary. We will specify both for a catering kitchen.
Do you fit fire blankets as well as supply them?
Yes, and we would rather fit them. Position is most of the value, and a blanket left on a worktop in its packet has never put a fire out.
